Birthstones by Month: Find Your Colour, Your Crystal & Your Meaning
What's your birthstone?
It's one of the first questions people ask when choosing crystal jewellery — and we love birthstones at Let’s Jam.
But we're going to let you in on something:
You don't have to limit yourself to one stone.
Traditional birthstones are specific gemstones associated with each month. But when you're choosing jewellery for its colour, symbolism and the meaning you personally connect with, we think your birthstone can be a starting point rather than a rulebook.
Think about its colour.
Think about what you want to bring into your life.
And then explore the other crystals within that colour family.
Because sometimes the stone you're drawn to isn't your official birthstone at all.
And that's absolutely fine.
January — Garnet ❤️
Colour family: Deep red
Garnet is the traditional January birthstone and is best known for its beautiful deep-red colour.
If you're a January baby but want to explore beyond Garnet, look towards other warm red and earthy crystals.
At Let’s Jam, Carnelian is a beautiful alternative to explore.
We associate Carnelian with confidence, creativity, vitality and courage — making it a wonderful choice when you want jewellery that feels energising and empowering.
Don't get caught up on finding exactly the "correct" red.
Choose the shade and stone that speaks to you.
February — Amethyst 💜
Colour family: Purple
February babies have one of the most recognisable birthstones of them all:
Amethyst.
And luckily, we LOVE Amethyst at Let’s Jam.
Traditionally associated with its distinctive purple colour, Amethyst is one of those crystals that manages to look gorgeous whether you're wearing one small stone or covering yourself in it.
At Let’s Jam, we associate Amethyst with tranquillity and spiritual awareness.
It's a beautiful stone for anyone seeking a sense of calm, balance and intuition.
And no — you absolutely don't need to be born in February to wear it.
March — Aquamarine 🩵
Colour family: Pale blue / aqua
March belongs to the dreamy blues of Aquamarine.
Its name practically gives the game away: think clear oceans, pale blue skies and watery aqua shades.
At Let’s Jam, we associate Aquamarine with serenity and calm, making it a beautiful crystal for jewellery you want to feel peaceful and soothing.
But here's where our colour-family idea becomes fun.
If you love March's blue tones, you could also explore:
Amazonite — associated with joy and communication.
Apatite — which we associate with growth and inspiration.
Turquoise — traditionally associated with protection and stability.
One birthstone colour.
Several completely different crystal personalities.
April — Diamond / Clear Crystal 🤍
Colour family: Clear / white
Yes, April's traditional birthstone is Diamond.
But your bank account doesn't necessarily need to know that.
If what you love is the clear, luminous aesthetic, explore the clear-crystal family.
One of our favourites is Clear Quartz.
We call Clear Quartz The King of Crystals.
It's traditionally associated in crystal practices with clarity and amplification, which makes it one of the most versatile stones in our collection.
You'll also find Rutilated Quartz, where beautiful needle-like inclusions run through the quartz and make every piece wonderfully individual.
So if you're an April baby looking beyond diamonds, the quartz family gives you plenty to play with.
May — Emerald 💚
Colour family: Rich green
May's traditional birthstone is the magnificent Emerald.
Green is also one of the best colour families for exploring different crystals.
Alongside Emerald, look at:
Green Aventurine — which we associate with luck, opportunity and optimism.
Prehnite — associated with prophecy, intuition and dreams in crystal traditions.
Different greens.
Different meanings.
Same gorgeous colour family.
If you're choosing a gift for someone born in May, a green crystal bracelet can therefore be a lovely way to reference their birth month without necessarily choosing a traditional Emerald.
June — Pearl, Moonstone & Alexandrite 🤍
Colour family: White / iridescent / colour-changing
June is unusual because modern birthstone lists commonly give it several options, including Pearl, Moonstone and Alexandrite.
That gives June babies permission to have a little fun.
Look towards luminous whites, translucent stones, flashes of colour and crystals that change dramatically depending on the light.
If that slightly magical aesthetic is what attracts you, Labradorite is well worth exploring.
Labradorite isn't a traditional June birthstone, but its flashes of colour make every piece look different as it moves.
At Let’s Jam, we associate Labradorite with destiny, transformation and intuition.
July — Ruby ❤️
Colour family: Red / pink
July's traditional birthstone is Ruby.
But if deep ruby red isn't quite your thing, broaden the palette.
Red can move towards warm Carnelian, while softer pink tones open an entirely different crystal world.
And that brings us to one of the most loved stones on our stand:
Rose Quartz.
Known as the stone of love in modern crystal traditions, Rose Quartz is associated with love, friendship, compassion and emotional connection.
Ruby might be July's official stone.
But if Rose Quartz makes your heart happier?
Wear the Rose Quartz.
August — Peridot 💚
Colour family: Fresh green
Peridot gives August its distinctive bright green.
If you're shopping by colour rather than strictly by gemstone, explore the wider green family.
Green Aventurine is a particularly fun alternative because of its traditional association with luck and opportunity.
We also stock beautiful green stones including Prehnite and Emerald.
This is exactly why we love shopping for crystals by colour.
Three green bracelets can look similar from across the room while representing completely different things to the person wearing them.
September — Sapphire 💙
Colour family: Deep blue
September's traditional Sapphire gives us one of our favourite colour families:
BLUE.
If you love that rich, deep colour, take a look at Lapis Lazuli.
Lapis has been treasured for thousands of years for its extraordinary blue colour.
At Let’s Jam, we associate Lapis Lazuli with truth and wisdom.
You can also move around the blue spectrum.
Try Apatite for brighter ocean blues, Aquamarine for something softer or Amazonite for blue-green tones.
Your September birthstone doesn't have to mean wearing exactly the same shade of blue forever.
October — Opal & Tourmaline 🩷
Colour family: Pink / multicoloured
October gets to have fun.
Its modern birthstones include Opal and Tourmaline, giving you an enormous range of possible colours.
For a softer pink direction, explore Rose Quartz and Rhodonite.
At Let’s Jam, we associate Rhodonite with compassion and emotional balance, while Rose Quartz is all about love, friendship and opening the heart.
October babies definitely don't need to be boring.
November — Topaz & Citrine 💛
Colour family: Golden yellow / warm orange
November is sunshine in crystal form.
One of its recognised birthstones is Citrine, which you'll find right here in our collection.
Citrine's warm yellow-to-golden tones make it an incredibly cheerful stone to wear.
At Let’s Jam, we associate Citrine with light, positivity and abundance.
If you love that warm colour family, also explore Tiger's Eye with its beautiful golden-brown bands and Sunstone with its warm, glowing appearance.
These are the colours that look like someone managed to turn sunshine into jewellery.
December — Turquoise, Tanzanite & Zircon 💙
Colour family: Blue / turquoise
December gives us another spectacular blue family.
Turquoise itself is one of December's recognised birthstones — and we have plenty of it at Let’s Jam.
We associate Turquoise with protection and stability.
But if you're shopping through colour, December opens the door to an entire ocean of possibilities.
Try:
Aquamarine for pale watery blue.
Amazonite for gorgeous blue-green shades.
Apatite for vivid blue.
Lapis Lazuli for something deeper.
And Turquoise when you want the classic.
Your birth month is the beginning — not the rule
This is probably the most important thing we want you to take from this guide.
There are traditional birthstones.
We're not trying to rewrite them.
But jewellery is personal.
If you're a February baby who can't stand purple, we're not going to chase you around Camden Market trying to force an Amethyst bracelet onto your wrist.
Start with your birthstone.
Look at its colour family.
Then look at the meanings traditionally associated with other crystals in that family.
And finally?
Choose the one you're drawn to.
Shop by meaning instead of month
You can also forget birthdays completely.
Walk up to our crystal display and ask yourself:
What do I want more of in my life right now?
Love?
Look towards Rose Quartz.
Calm?
Explore Amethyst or Aquamarine.
Luck and opportunity?
Try Green Aventurine.
Confidence and energy?
Look at Carnelian.
Clarity?
Explore Clear Quartz.
Wisdom and truth?
Try Lapis Lazuli.
Protection?
Look towards Turquoise or Black Obsidian.
The fun is finding the combination of colour + meaning + jewellery that feels right for you.
Find yours at Let’s Jam
